The Legal Tech AI Role You Did Not Know Existed: AI Engineer Role Alert.
If you have ever thought AI engineering was only for tech companies, Norton Rose Fulbright is about to change that picture. One of the world's largest law firms with more than 3,000 lawyers across the US, Europe, Canada, Asia, and Africa has built an in-house R&D capability and is hiring an AI Engineer to sit right at the heart of it.
This is a genuinely rare opportunity: AI engineering inside a global professional services firm, working on agentic workflows, retrieval systems, and evaluation harnesses that will shape how legal services are delivered. The firm holds a 2026 Great Place to Work Certification and an explicit commitment to equitable hiring. For BDPN community members with a background in AI, machine learning, or backend engineering, this one deserves your full attention.
The Role
AI Engineer at Norton Rose Fulbright.
London (on-site) | Permanent | Approx. £61,000 + benefits | Posted: 18 September 2026 | Closes: December 2026.
Norton Rose Fulbright's Legal Innovation, Design & Technology team is building end-to-end AI capabilities. The AI Engineer will own the core infrastructure: agentic workflows, retrieval and context pipelines, agent evaluation harnesses, and the systems that connect legal data to AI-driven products.
You can also search "AI Engineer" directly at nortonrosefulbright.com/en/careers the role is live and routes to their applicant tracking system.
What the role involves:
Building end-to-end AI capabilities for R&D products in a legal services context
Designing and implementing agentic workflows
Building retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipelines and context management systems
Creating and maintaining agent evaluation and testing harnesses
You will need: Hands-on experience with agentic AI architectures, RAG pipelines, and LLM application development. Strong Python engineering skills. Experience shipping AI features to production, not just prototyping.
How to apply well:
Frame your experience around production AI, not just experiments. Law firms care deeply about reliability and risk. Show them you have shipped AI systems that actually run in the real world — note deployment environments, monitoring approaches, and how you handled failures.
Understand what RAG means in a regulated industry. In legal services, retrieval accuracy is not a nice-to-have, it directly affects legal outcomes. In your application, demonstrate awareness of retrieval precision, hallucination risks, and how you have mitigated them in past work.
Lean into the interdisciplinary angle. Your user is a lawyer, not a developer. If you have experience explaining technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders or translating business requirements into AI system design, make that explicit.
Reference their DEI public commitments. Norton Rose Fulbright holds a Great Place to Work Certification and has publicly committed to diverse hiring. It is entirely appropriate to mention the BDPN community in your cover letter as part of your professional identity.
Move quickly. The listing is live with a December close, but top law firm roles fill before deadline. Apply this week.
